Maddaloni

Along the Appian Way, a testimony of the Iron Age

In ancient times, the territory of the municipality of Maddaloni was occupied by the Etruscan city of Calatai, probably founded around the 8th century BC. Today, thanks to various excavation projects in the area, the history of this city, almost completely swallowed up by the abyss of time, can be experienced once again thanks to the Archaeological Museum of Calatia, housed in the impressive Casino di Starza Penta, itself one of the most valuable and significant historical and architectural testimonies of Maddaloni.

The symbol of the town is undoubtedly the Norman castle, which dominates every street in the town from above. Situated at an altitude of 170 metres above sea level, the fortress took on considerable strategic importance over the centuries, until it was put to the test by Ferrante of Aragon in 1460, at the time of the famous Baron's Conspiracy. The castle remained abandoned until 1821, when it was bought by the De Sivo family, who turned it into a private residence.
