The birthplace of ancient Capua
Built on the ruins of one of the largest and most influential cities of ancient Italy, Santa Maria Capua Vetere boasts a priceless archaeological heritage, the highest point of which is the Anfiteatro Campano, second in size only to the Colosseum. Near this extraordinary structure stands the city's famous Mithraeum, one of the most important places in the world dedicated to the Mithraic cult.
Other impressions and sensations of this majestic city can also be experienced in the halls of the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua, set up in the heart of Santa Maria Capua Vetere to display and protect, in accordance with the most modern exhibition criteria, the evidence and artefacts that have come to light as a result of archaeological excavations carried out in the area since the second half of the 20th century. An extremely fascinating itinerary that will take visitors through all the stages of Capua's development, from the city's early beginnings to the splendour of the Samnite and Roman eras, through to its decline and rebirth in a new form.
