The first news relating to the imposing fortified structure, which dominates the city of Naples from above, dates back to 1275, when the fortress, referred to as "Belforte", was inhabited by the family of King Carlo of Anjou. Between 1537 and 1547 the castle was rebuilt on commission by the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo and took the characteristic configuration with a six-pointed star system. It thus became one of the most modern fortresses of the time. The vast fortress square and the monumental stands offer an unforgettable view of the city and the entire gulf.
